6 Signs the Menswear Industry is Exploding

You don't have to live in a cave to recognize that menswear is on the rise. From the proliferation of male-specific versions of popular women's retailers to the adoption of high fashion by celebrity athletes, menswear is here to say.

1. Bergorf Goodman finally created a male-specific Instagram account last week, Goodmans, an appropriate move to attract a user base who would otherwise not subscribe to the female-skewed Bergdorfs account and further aligning with their brick-and-mortar business model of Bergdorf Goodman and Bergdorf Men’s Store across the street.  And what better timing than the debut of the spring/summer 2015 menswear shows!

2. Dispensing insider industry news, Business of Fashion just added a menswear-specific hub featuring industry leaders like Raf Simons (Creative Director at Dior), what’s trending in menswear, leading retailers and targeted news and analysis.  How’s that for the validation of menswear?

3. Recently, contemporary e-tailer Shopbop introduced its male counterpart East Dane, heavily featuring casual sportswear designers like Levi’s, T by Alexander Wang and Herschel Supply Co.

4. Net-a-Porter’s male equivalent Mr. Porter is an established industry favorite featuring hard hitters like Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Acne Studios and Saint Laurent.  Don’t forget their impeccable styling.

5. Russell Westbrook quickly instructs his followers #donthateonthebrodie, his famous moniker accompanying his #ootd posts.  Yes, he knows he’s pushing the envelope in the drop-crotch capri pants he wore to the Teen Choice Awards.  But hey, if it landed him a Barneys collaboration and a front row seat next to Anna Wintour at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, he’s doing something right.

6. Westbrook isn't the only athlete on the fashion radar. New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is a two-time attendee of the Met Gala, the fashion-version of the Oscars, and has earned his ticket to Men's Fashion Week in Paris, gracing the Lanvin, Givenchy and Rick Owens shows.
