The 5 Fall Trends I Want Now

Recently, clickbait headlines like "How to Dress Like Gigi Hadid" and "The It Bag You Need Now" have not resonated with me.  I want to look like myself and not a carbon copy of what a Vogue editor deems worthy.  If that were the case, I'd tell you to run to the nearest department store, or wherever people are shopping these days, and scoop up head to toe red, the Cult Gaia bag that's probably flooding your Instagram and sock boots (looks I do like with full disclosure).

Getting dressed, for me, has always been an exercise in personal style and expressing my individuality.  Or as Amelia Diamond of Man Repeller wrote, speaking directly to my soul, "I want everything to be unique and special, just like my parents tell me I am."

Despite deliberate avoidance of obvious trends, I sometimes succumb to the temptation of what's trending.  I'm only human!  But this isn't about whether or not I'm basic.  The verdict's still out although my closet full of Outdoor Voices leggings, Calvin Klein logo bra and underwear sets and Mansur Gavriel tote may say otherwise.

This article is all about the five things I absolutely, desperately NEED this fall.  In organizing this post, I realized these were, in fact, trends, defined by Webster as "a prevailing tendency or inclination."  So voila, the five prevailing tendencies I'm coveting now:

1. The Oversized Sweater

Sweaters for fall are almost as groundbreaking as florals for spring, but this Ganni pullover has been in my Net-a-Porter wishlist for over a year.  I've thought about it almost as much as my first pair of Birkenstocks three years ago.  At $495, it's certainly steep, but it is handmade in Italy and takes over three days to make!!  Perhaps it's time I start a GoFundMe...

2. The Shearling Jacket

Enter another item I've been coveting for as long as I can remember.  There's an Acne Studios version.  An Arrivals version.  And last but not least, a Balenciaga version.  All are iterations of the same aesthetic: moto-inspired with an exposed shearling collar and trim that screams you are too cool for school.

3. The Corsets

The corset in 2017 is a far cry from the organ suffocation devices of the 16th century.  From Orseund Iris' structured knit corset worn by Bella Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski to Tibi's polyvinyl version from their Spring '18 runway show, the corset is the new must-have accessory.

4. The Puffer Jacket

Practical and warm, this classic outerwear piece feels fresh for fall in fun colors and textures.

5. The Scrunchie

With '90's fashion all the rage right now (just peep your local Urban Outfitters brimming with Champion, Fila and Tommy Hilfiger), it was only a matter of time before the scrunchie resurfaced.  My reintroduction to the scrunchie came after "borrowing" a friend's.  While initially relegated to the confines of my studio apartment, I recently started wearing my scrunchie out in the wild otherwise known as the streets of New York to compliments!  Once I saw the proliferation of printed scrunchies at Mansur Gavriel's Spring 2018 presentation, I knew we were in it for the long haul.
